Ultralight Backpackers Cheat Sheet: Multipurpose Hiking Gear

2 min read
Learning to reduce your base pack weight is essential when backpacking over longer distances. Not only does it make you lighter (and therefore faster) but it also alleviates the negative effects on the body that you may face from carrying heavier weight. So you’ve downsized your pack weight and cut back on non-essential items. But what else can you do to become ultra-lightweight? Here’s our introduction to multipurpose hiking gear. The lightweight backpackers ultimate secret.

Hiking Poles

Multipurpose uses: upright shelter supports, emergency splint

The handy trekking pole can be substituted as the upright supports at either end of your tarp shelter, and can even replace some traditional tent poles - shaving extra weight.

Sleeping Mat

Multipurpose uses: backpack frame, seat

If you are using a frameless backpack, use a sleeping mat as a makeshift frame for extra support. A lightweight foam mat is also great for use as a seat if stopping for any amount of time.

Paracord

Multipurpose uses: clothesline, kindling, sewing thread, secure structures

Paracord is greatly underestimated. This handy piece of cord can be used to secure shelters or items to your pack, create a clothesline or bow drill, and hang items off the ground. Unravel the cord to reveal the inner threads, and use them as kindling to start a fire, use it as emergency dental floss, sewing thread and even as a fishing line.

Spork

Multipurpose uses: fork/spoon/knife

Just like the cooking pot, you can save an amazing amount of weight and space by doubling down your cutlery with an all-in-one spork.

Bandana

Multipurpose uses: head/neck protection, water filter, towel, pot holder, sling

The most versatile multi-tasking essential. The classic bandana can protect you from the elements as a cold weather buff or sun protector, and can be used for countless other things like a handkerchief, sling, water filter and towel.

Cooking Pot

Multipurpose uses: plate/mug/bowl

There’s no need to buy multiple cooking vessels when a single cooking pot can do the job of all three!

Duct Tape

Multipurpose uses: gear repair, emergency tent waterproofing, plaster, blister protection

Duct tape is a brilliant multipurpose item and is great to have at hand on longer hiking trips. Duct tape can be used for emergency gear repair and waterproofing. It can also be used as a plaster to protect you from blisters or used as a makeshift bandage.

Learning to make smart choices that will allow you to reduce your weight takes time. Some of the above items and uses may seem obvious, but by objectively listing them and coming up with creative uses you will double-down you pack size immediately. However, don’t forget that safety is paramount. Never sacrifice weight if it weakens the effectiveness of your gear.
