Hard to strike and snapped

Found these to be difficult to strike. Tried four matches in a row and all of them snapped before lighting. Trying to strike them took about 10 attempts before they snapped.
Maybe there's a nack we are missing.
This was a practice before the DofE. Looking for an alternative.
