Being active outdoors in green spaces can significantly benefit your mental and physical wellbeing according to the NHS.¹ It can improve your mood and physical health, help build connections with the community and reduce loneliness.

There are even studies to back this up. Mind reports that ecotherapy has been shown to help with mild to moderate low mood, thought to be due to combining physical activity, social contact, and connecting with nature.²

Another study of 20,000 people by the European Centre for Environment and Human Health found that people who spent even two hours a week in green spaces were much more likely to report good health and improved psychological wellbeing than those who did not.³

There is clear evidence that being outside and active can positively affect a person's mental and physical wellbeing, something we passionately believe in here at Blacks.

UK locations with the best air quality

Outdoor scene

Air quality is incredibly important for your wellbeing, as poor air quality with pollutants such as carbon monoxide, ozone and nitrogen oxides are found to have strong links with heart disease, cancer and pneumonia, according to the World Health Organization.⁶

Furthermore, a study by the British Journal of Psychiatry has found poor air quality adversely affects people's mental wellbeing.⁷ It found evidence that exposure to air pollutants can increase the risk of depression, anxiety and psychoses.

As such, areas with better air quality are far more likely to be places that can facilitate good wellbeing.

1. Powys

Air Quality Index Score: 19

Powys, a Welsh location, comes in first position for UK regions with the best air quality, scoring 19. We looked at Powys’ most populous city, Newtown, and took the air quality index score from Accuweather, where an index of 50 or lower is considered ‘good’.

2. Conwy

Air Quality Index Score: 21

Wales is clearly the place to go for fresh air, as another Welsh area, Conwy, comes in second place for areas in the UK with the best air quality. Using Accuweather, we took the air quality score for the most populous settlement for Conwy, the county town of the same name, which was 21. As well as having good air quality, Conwy is approximately a 50-minute drive from the Eryri National Park, where there’s fresh air aplenty.

3. Wiltshire / Cornwall

Air Quality Index Score: 22

Lastly, in joint third place for regions in the UK with the absolute best air quality, we have Wiltshire and Cornwall, both located in southern England. Swindon, the most populous settlement in Wiltshire, and Redruth in Cornwall both recorded an air quality index score of 22, way below the ‘good’ threshold of 50. Methodology

To reveal the top wellness hotspot locations in the UK, we sourced the location of each health retreat on Eventbrite, filtering by ‘retreat’ and ‘health’ on 13/02/2024. We excluded all online events. We used the county or region of each retreat to form our seed list and looked at all regions with at least five retreats.

We sourced the number of walking trails for each location using All Trails, looking at ‘walking’ trails under the activity filter on 14/02/2024. We calculated the number of walking trails per 100 square miles of each location using the area of each location sourced from Population Data and where unavailable Wikipedia.

We sourced the average tree coverage rounded to the nearest whole number for each location using Forestry Maps on 14/02/2024.

We sourced the number of sports complexes in each location using Tripadvisor and calculated the number of highly-rated sports complexes rounded to the nearest whole number, looking at sports complexes rated four out of five stars and above on 14/02/2024.

We sourced the number of gyms and yoga studios within five miles of each area’s most populous city/town sourced from the Office for National Statistics using Yelp on 14/02/2024, by searching for ‘gym’ and ‘yoga’.

We sourced the air quality index of each area’s most populous city/town using AccuWeather on 14/02/2024.

For Lanarkshire, we calculated the total area, number of walking trails, number of retreats, number of spas and highly-rated spas, number of sports complexes and highly-rated sports complexes, number of gyms, and number of yoga studios in North and South Lanarkshire. We calculated the average tree coverage of North and South Lanarkshire.

We gave each location a normalised score out of 10, based on the factors above, before calculating an average score out of 10 for each location. We gave a weighting of two to the factors: number of mindfulness retreats, number of walking trails per 100 square miles, gyms within five miles of the most populous city and yoga studios within five miles of the most populous city. We gave these factors a weighting of two as the NHS details the impact of mindfulness and gentle yoga alongside walking outside and regular exercise on mental and physical well-being. We gave a weighting of 0.5 to the air quality index of the most populous city. This allowed us to calculate which locations are the best wellness hotspots in the UK.
