The Man Behind ‘We Go Outside Too’ – Marlon Patrice

Does nature really have the power to change lives? Listen to Marlon Patrice, founder of ‘We Go Outside Too’ and you’ll be hard-pressed to disagree.

Following the tragic death of his son in 2020, due to knife crime, and the onset of the COVID pandemic, Marlon was compelled to turn his grief into a power for good. ‘We Go Outside Too’ is his brainchild, an active group making the countryside accessible, with a clear focus on empowering the Black Community to experience the physical, mental and spiritual benefits of nature.

In this article we explore the deep connection Marlon has with the outdoors and find out how this ground-breaking group is creating positive change for those it empowers. Watch our exclusive documentary with ‘We Go Outside Too’.

Behind the Man

“Inspirational”, “Unique”, “Endlessly Positive” – Just a few soundbites of how members of ‘We Go Outside Too’ describe Marlon Patrice. Understanding where he has come from, gives a clear picture of the man. Birmingham-based Marlon has always had a passion for the outdoors, and a natural ability to bring people together. For most of his life, Marlon has been active outdoors, competing as a long distance runner and exploring the healing power of nature as a qualified herbalist. His selfless ability to help others has always shone. He’s been an active community leader in Birmingham, taking part in launching projects such as Run Brum and the Couch to 5k.

In 2020, while we were all feeling the full-force of the pandemic, tragedy hit Marlon’s family when he was told his teenage son had become a victim of knife crime. Navigating the grief was impounded by online Zoom sessions which fell short of providing Marlon with the support he needed. As a result, he sought a different path, finding solace and peace in connecting with the natural world. “My connection to nature developed on a deeper level. I started to feel empowered and able to face my trauma and focus on future goals, which would also benefit the wider Black Community.”

The Need for Green Spaces

Finding deeper clarity on the value and power of green spaces, especially those on his doorstep, compelled Marlon to share the benefits of the outdoors with the wider community. He was witness to the ever-expanding concrete cityscape of Birmingham, the neglected parks and fields replaced with luxury apartments and offices which are inaccessible to the majority. After researching the problem further, Marlon was shocked to find that the impact on inner city children and families ran deep, with underprivileged communities in Birmingham living up to 3 miles away from their nearest green space.

It was at this point that Marlon decided to take action. He created a safe space for Black people to meet up, join a community and connect with the outdoors, something which has been branded as a predominately white past-time. This amazing community is ‘We Go Outside Too’.

The Creation of a Community

‘We Go Outside Too’ was moulded to bring “the rawness and authenticity of nature to the Black Community by aligning mental and physical well-being therapy with outdoor activities”. Marlon’s activism created a positive place which makes the countryside accessible and seeks to overcome some of the barriers faced by inner city kids and the Black community, such as transport costs, equipment, mental health support and green space access.

From the Shropshire Hills to the Jurassic Coast and beyond, Marlon and his WGOT family are driving the narrative that the outdoors is for everyone. And it has clearly worked with over 400 members currently taking part in UK hikes, camping trips and adventures together. ‘We Go Outside Too’ is supported by Merrell who like us, seek to create awareness about the mission of the movement.

The Future of WGOT

It is clear that Marlon and the WGOT family are changing lives through community and outdoor connection. The future looks bright as Marlon told us he wants to take the scheme international, connecting with walking groups in Africa where many of its members have roots. Their message of inclusivity, healing and demystifying the countryside has global potential; after all every one of us could do with a little more outdoor space in our lives. As the pandemic eases, Marlon is continuing to engage people with his 22 Waterfalls Challenge, an exciting aim for members to visit 22 waterfalls around the UK to commemorate Marlon’s son who was buried on 20.02.2020.

The rapid growth of ‘We Go Outside Too’ means spaces to attend the adventures and expeditions fill up quickly so if you want to learn more about the group and get involved, follow WGOT on Instagram @wegooutsidetoo. The group also has a GOFundMe page to support specifically the 22 Waterfalls Challenge.
