OEX Crusade Boots In-Depth Review

The Crusade Boot is OEX’s first foray into the world of technical outdoor footwear. So what can you expect from the hotly-anticipated debut? We’ve taken a deep dive into the technical specs of the boot and sent a pair to experienced mountaineer, James Coutts, to test out on a Stac Pollaidh, “the best wee mountain in Scotland”.

Are OEX boots any good?

OEX is one of the most popular outdoor brands in the UK and has a reputation for creating high-end technical products at a mid-range price point. The Crusade boots are no different and come packed with mountain-ready features that prioritise the three most important factors when it comes to outdoor footwear – comfort, protection and grip. Let’s take a closer look at the tech in these boots that deliver those all-important factors.

Here’s what James Coutts had to say after testing them in the mountains: “The OEX Crusade Mid Walking Boots have well and truly exceeded my expectations. They are the first pair of boots I have had that didn’t require breaking in, comfort straight out the box. The boots are lightweight and have all the functions I require for a day out in the Scottish Mountains. These will be my go-to boot for long demanding walks throughout the year”.

How comfortable are OEX Crusade Boots?

OEX Crusade walking boots rank very highly for comfort. Tested on an all-day hike, there were a few standout features that prevented aching and maximised support. Firstly, the Crusade boots have a supportive PU midsole and an Ortholite insole that absorb impact as you manoeuvre over rocky terrain. Ortholite insoles deliver long-lasting cushioning and arch support whilst remaining lightweight and breathable. They also boast memory foam ankle collars that provide superior support and comfort on long hikes with varying ground conditions.

James: “Once I started hiking, the first thing I noticed about the OEX Crusade’s was how comfy they are. The boots are stiff enough to support your ankle all day, but also have a nice amount of flex to help over rougher terrain".

Are OEX Crusade Boots waterproof?

The OEX Crusade boots are fully waterproof thanks to their advanced eVent membrane. This provides a protective barrier that prevents water from outside from getting in while allowing water vapour from sweat to escape from within the boot. There’s also a rubber heel counter and toe cap to deflect debris and provide extra protection from puddles. This high level of breathability and waterproofness keeps your feet dry all year round, meaning the Crusade Boots are a reliable companion on every outdoor adventure you embark on.

James: “Stac Pollaidh has a lot of mixed terrain, but the first thing I encountered was bog. The boots feature eVent Membrane & are fully waterproof. This was put to the test straight away. The boots handled the conditions well and my feet stayed dry all day long.”

Do OEX Crusade Boots have a good grip?

OEX has trusted the experts and installed a Vibram sole on the Crusade Boot. This high-performance rubber offers unparalleled sticky grip and optimal ground adaptability, perfect for everything from lowland adventures to mountain scrambles. The soles have a multi-directional lug design with 5mm lugs at the front and 7mm at the heel, which is engineered to provide an optimal balance of traction and durability.

James: “As I got further up the mountain, I had to pass some large stone steps and gravel. The boots gave me confidence due to the sticky Vibram sole. I found the grip was good over multiple types of terrain.

How stiff are the soles on OEX Crusade Boots?

The Vibram soles on the OEX Crusade Boots are purposefully stiff to provide stability when walking, particularly when carrying additional weight with a pack. Stiff soles on walking shoes and boots are designed to protect your feet from both impact and abnormal movement, especially when ascending or descending on a hill walk.

Do OEX Crusade Boots need breaking in?

Any type of footwear will become more comfortable after repeated wear as the fabrics relax over time. This is called breaking in. However, the OEX Crusade Boots are extremely comfortable straight out of the box. This is helped by the soft yet durable nubuck leather upper alongside the stretchy mesh panels that make up the boots’ upper. The OEX Crusade Boots also feature an Adjustable Lacing System that provides a secure, locked-in fit for all foot shapes and sizes.

James: “They are the first pair of boots I have had that didn’t require breaking in. The laces pass through a gripper at the top which keeps the laces tight whilst tying. This means that they don’t loosen over time which improves overall comfort.”

What activities are OEX Crusade Boots suited to?

The OEX Crusade Boots are primarily designed for walking, hiking and backpacking. Their impressive levels of comfort make them suitable for all-day use while the grip and waterproof performance make them a reliable pair of boots for serious hikes. The boots are not classed as mountaineering boots as they are not crampon-friendly, so if you are looking to head up an icy summit then we recommend opting for more technical mountaineering boots.

What season are OEX Crusade Boots suitable for?

The Crusade hiking boots are equipped for general walking and hiking use across in all seasons. They have a sticky Vibram grip and powerful waterproof membrane that shields them from wet ground in winter. They also benefit from being highly breathable with mesh panels that keep your feet cool and dry from the inside during hot summer hikes.
