Berghaus MADEKIND™ | Award-Winning Sustainability

Everyday Life Outdoors 4 min read

Our planet has perfected its set up over hundreds of millions of years, achieving ways of sustaining life on Earth that we still don’t yet fully comprehend. Our diverse natural world and stable climate held the key to life long before we even existed. But that balance is under threat. Every day new evidence of unsustainable human impact on the environment emerges.

For those of us who are passionate about outdoor adventure, the loss of green spaces and diversity is devastating. The team at Berghaus are united by their passion for the great outdoors and in a conscious bid to become more sustainable, they have continued to develop their ‘MADEKIND™’ initiative. Let’s take a deep dive into why ‘MADEKIND™’ is so important.

Meet MADEKIND™

Berghaus is leading the charge on delivering environmentally-friendly gear that doesn’t compromise on performance or craftsmanship. ‘MADEKIND™’ is the brand’s sustainability programme, a symbol of their commitment to delivering performance gear that’s kinder to the planet. They are using the latest manufacturing innovations to dramatically reduce their carbon impact and are constantly on the lookout for greener fabrics and technologies.

Find a product with the MADEKIND™ symbol on it and you’ll know it uses eco-friendly materials or has been made using greener processes. Put simply, MADEKIND gear from Berghaus combines high performance with low environmental impact. That’s great news for our planet!

For a product to qualify as part of the Berghaus MADEKIND™ range, it must meet at least one of the follow criteria: be made from recycled materials, be made from a bluesign® approved fabric, or be made with the award-winning COLOURKIND™ process. Here’s a little extra detail on what all that means:

COLOURKIND™

Berghaus’ award-winning fabric dyeing technology, COLOURKIND™ reduces the amount of dyeing stages a fabric goes through compared with regular fabrics. The result is 89% less water than traditional colouring processes, 63% less chemicals and 60% reduced CO2 emissions. That’s 100% commitment to supporting the environment in our book! Plus, this process means the fabric’s colour will not fade, keeping your Berghaus gear looking fresh and bright.

Recycled Fabrics

There are many recycled fabrics used within Berghaus products, however only those with more than 50% recycled materials are stamped with the esteemed MADEKIND™ label. Each year tonnes of plastic waste enters our oceans so by reusing plastics to create new fabrics, Berghaus is reducing waste polluting our planet or ending up at landfill. Each time you choose recycled outdoor gear you’ll be helping to reduce the production of new plastics, minimise our dependence on oil and cut CO2 emissions.

bluesign® Fabrics

bluesign® is the industry leading initiative which works with chemical suppliers, textile mills and component manufacturers to eliminate harmful substances from the supply chain. Berghaus was the first British outdoor brand to join the bluesign® system and uses it to work with responsible suppliers. Any Berghaus product that contains more than 90% bluesign® approved fabrics means it can be labelled MADEKIND™.

Berghaus believes that building durable, long-lasting gear is one of the most impactful things they can do for the environment. That’s why they’ll do everything they possibly can to keep your kit going over land, not into landfill. So, if your kit does become a bit worn and weathered and in need a bit of TLC then Berghaus will repair it for free – no questions asked. If there is a genuine fault or defect in your item, and it’s still under guarantee, they’ll replace it. But, if that 20-year-old jacket of yours has seen more summits than hot dinners, then it might be time to buy a new one. The old one can be recycled or re-purposed following review by the brand’s quality assurance team.
