Armchair Adventures | The Best Outdoor Inspired Films

In these wholly uncertain times, there may be a lack of outdoor adventure in your schedule. You can turn this time of enforced laziness into an opportunity to see the world from the safety of your couch. Turn your TV into a window.

This is first entry in our Armchair Adventure series of how to get the best from the weeks ahead. We’ve scoured a number of streaming services to bring you 10 adventurous movies that are sure to leave you on the edge of seat, whether you’re aged 5 or 75.

Inspired by true events, The Aeronauts stars high-flying duo, Eddie Redmayne as a revolutionary meteorologist and Felicity Jones as a daredevil hot-air balloon pilot. Set in 1862, the pair travel on a treacherous skyward expedition to make new discoveries, and unforgettable memories along the way.

A remake? Hear us out before you all groan. No one can take away the 1995 epic starring Robin Williams, and trust us – we aren’t trying to, but put your hands together for this epic reiteration. Start off with an all-star cast featuring Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black & Karen Gillan and you’re onto a winner before they’ve said their first line. Welcome to the Jungle steers away from classic Jumanji, following four high school kids as they get pulled into a video game and fight their way through the tropical environment to return home. It’s definitely one to watch.

A contemporary classic, Cast Away  follows Tom Hanks’ character, Chuck, after the plane he is travelling on crash lands on a desert island. Befriending a beached volleyball named Wilson, Chuck and Wilson must hang on to dwindling hope, and battle whatever the island throws at them, with little resource to hand.

Another jungle film? Well you can’t get much more adventurous than tropical vegetation as far as the eye can see and one or two deadly creatures. The live action depiction of Disney’s A Jungle Book, follows main character Mowgli, starting life in the jungle and raised by wild animals, his curiosity leads him to the nearby village, until his journey of belonging leads to dark and deadly feats.

IMDb rating: 7.7/10

An out of this world adventure, quite literally. Gravity, or lack of, follows the Dr. Ryan Stone (played by Sandra Bullock) lifts off into the atmosphere on her first mission into space. Co-star, George Clooney, plays fellow astronaut Matt Kowalsky, the only difference being his vast amount of space flight experience. A theatrical worst-case scenario ensues, where their shuttle is destroyed, leaving the pair to fight with everything they have in the hope of returning home alive.

Lara Croft has come a long way since her pixelated days in the 90’s, the live action 2018 feature largely follows the adventurous archetypal narrative we all know and love. Tomb Raider sees Croft set sail on a journey to uncover the mysterious fate of her father, who disappeared years prior. We follow Lara on her endeavour that leads her to an ominous place in the ocean, off the coast of Japan, a test of her spirit as she delves further into the unknown.

Adapted from a true story, Christopher McCandless has the perfect all-American dream lifestyle, graduating from university, excelling in both athletics and his studies. Making the decision to trade this in, he donates $24,000 worth of savings to charity and sets off on his hitchhiking pursuit across America, with the ultimate goal to reach Alaska. Into the Wild gives you a refreshing taste of getting back to your roots, and making the most of the little things in life.

A true feel-good animated film, Up is a heart-warming tale of a young boy reigniting an old man’s passion for adventure. Russell, an inquisitive Boy Scout with his heart in the right place, meets Mr Frederickson whilst trying to enlist his help to gain a Scout badge. Before you know it, Russell and Mr. Frederickson are whisked away by the hundreds of balloons tied to Mr. Frederickson’s house, on a fun-filled journey to Paradise Falls. When they arrive, not all is as it seems, can the unlikely duo uncover the dastardly goings-on whilst on their trip?

Your typical disaster film, and where would an action-packed narrative be without Gerard Butler? Geostorm follows the all real threat of climate change, with a fictitious catastrophic element. Following a succession of natural disasters, world leaders interject by introducing a network of satellites built to bring the climate back into line. What seems to be a perfect plan is suddenly in ruins when the satellites begin to attack the Earth, threatening the globe with an imminent geostorm. Can Butler identify what’s going on before it’s too late?

An adventure that can’t help but pull at your heart strings, multi-award winning actor Dev Patel stars as Saroo. Separated from his mother in India after falling asleep on a train, after a series of troubles on the streets before finding refuge in an orphanage, Saroo is adopted by an Australian couple. Fast forward two decades, and Saroo begins to question where he really came from. Follow his trials and tribulations as he relentlessly searches for his one, true home.
