adidas Infinite Trails 2018 - Bad Hofgastein, Austria

This summer Team Blacks travelled to the foothills of the Austrian Alps to take part in the first year of the adidas Infinite Trails mountain race. Captained by Blacks Ambassador Ellie Lacey, the team-of-three would each compete in an individual stage, climbing from the valley floor to the dizzying heights of a different mountain summit. The team’s combined distance would be a massive 122km in a single day, with over 7,400 metres of climb.

Before any of this could even begin, however, the team would be required to complete a mere 20k qualifying leg as a team. Snaking along the Gastein Valley, before shooting up the mountain slopes, this “prologue” leg would itself rank amongst the toughest runs any of the team had attempted.

Sometimes however, as Ellie knows all too well, you can't plan for everything . . .

Neil used to be a bookworm, an "indoor" type if ever there was one. After finishing a PhD he writes short stories about spooky places and odd people. Living in Switzerland, the Canadian Rockies and the north east region of the USA convinced him that there was something to be said for this whole outdoor thing. Now he runs everywhere he can, competing in races most weekends and endlessly planning the next great adventure to some far flung part of the world. Recent trips include Costa Rica, where he tried and failed to surf; Vietnam, where he almost got stuck in an underground tunnel; and back to Canada, where he came face-to-face with a bear. Watch this space for further updates on Neil's global bumblings and the occasional athletic success.
