This is my first survival knife, so I'm no expert, but here goes.
As a first knife, this gerber is great value compared to the price-range for other knives of this type.

I have 2 minor problems, however: firstly; the serrations on the lower part of the blade make carving a little fiddly, though it's managable.

Second; the fire-steel sucks. The rod itself is far too soft, which doesn't spark well, and isn't secure in the handle. I struck it a half-dozen times when it slipped out of the handle.

Over-all, though: the blade is a sturdy enough for batoning. The knife sits secure in the sheath and the handle is comfortable.

If you do get this knife; the whistle is on the toggle attached to the end of the handle and the sharpening stone is on the back of the plastic sheath. I was looking in the box as I thought they would be separate.

To be fair, it's a gimmick and not a major component so you can get by without noticing it's absence.
