How to clean your waterproof jacket

When you have a new jacket its amazing how the water just runs off the outside. This happens because of a durable water repellent treatment (DWR) that's applied at manufacture to all jackets. However, dirt, oil and normal household detergents will mask the DWR coating over time, causing the outside of the jacket to absorb water; Known as wetting out. 'Wetting out' reduces breathability, comfort and performance, making the jacket feel cold and wet to touch. Unlike normal detergents, technical cleaners from Granger's and Nikwax, remove dirt, oils and stains without harming the DWR; making your jacket work like new again and it's original performance restored!

  • Dirt causes fabric to wet out
  • Reduced breathability
  • Perspiration remains inside
  • Clean material
  • Fabric repels water
  • Original performance restored

Step by step cleaning instructions

  • 1

    Close zippers and Velcro flaps

  • 2

Shake bottle well and pour correct amount into the machine drawer or wash ball. See bottle for amounts

  • 3

Wash on a warm wash and rinse cycle. * Grangers cleaners are formulated to work from 30'c helping save up to 40% energy and protecting the environment.

  • 4

    Tumble dry if care allows.

How to reproof your waterproof jacket

Reproofing your waterproof jacket: Want to keep your old jacket performing like new? Over time, your jacket loses its durable water repellent (DWR) treatment due to dirt, oil and general wear and tear. Technical jackets need care and maintenance if they are to last a long time. Re-proofing your jacket is required to restore its breathability, comfort and performance so it can continue to protect you against the elements and not end up saturated.

Waterproofing spray instructions

  • 1

Ensure the garment is clean; if it needs cleaning follow the above instructions in our 'how to clean' section, using a technical cleaner such as Grangers 30'c wash.

  • 2

Before applying any spray, ensure all zips and Velcro flaps are closed.

  • 3

Shake the bottle and spray evenly onto the garment from a distance of 10-15cm (Dab any excess moisture with a clean cloth.)! If the spray is water based it is best applied to a damp garment!

  • 4

If the garment care label allows, tumble dry on a medium heat until dry.

Why not use 2 in 1 cleaner and re-proofer? Just follow the above instructions and it will clean and re-proof the garment all in on go!

How often do I re-proof my waterproof jacket?

There is no standard text-book answer to this question; only recommendations. This is because how often you need to reproof your jacket depends upon how often you use it, in what conditions and the quality of the material. For example, a jacket worn frequently on the hill in bad weather, hopping styles and brushing past stone walls will need re-proofing sooner than a jacket you wear on the odd occasion to the football.

The best way to tell when your jacket needs to be re-proofed is if wet patches start appearing on the outside fabric when it comes into contact with rain; this is known as 'wetting out'.

It may feel like the jacket is leaking, but this is usually due to a build up of water on the outer fabric. The build up of water reduces breathability, which means vapour builds up inside the jacket and is unable to escape; eventually soaking the clothing and creating a damp feeling next to the skin.

We recommend reproofing your jacket at least once every year or two! This time can vary depending on how often you use your jacket, and the material it is made from. Abrasion, grime and washing the fabric in normal household detergents can reduce the waterproof performance (DWR) of the garment, and so it's essential to keep it clean! Remember to look out for wet patches appearing on the outside of the jacket fabric as a tell-tail sign you need to reproof!

Maintaining and cleaning down

Down fill items are considered to be the hardest to clean. Some people believe you cannot clean down yourself and that it can only be done professionally. This is not the case, as many specialist products have been developed to make the process a lot easier to do yourself. The trick to cleaning down is not to wash it regularly, but with time and care.

Always remember: Check the label carefully before washing down. Professional cleaning might be the kindest route, and many manufacturers will be able to recommend a suitable service.

Often the down fill itself isn't dirty and doesn't need cleaning. If the surface fabric on your garment is looking a bit dirty it may just be in need of a cosmetic clean. If this is the case, a spray-on cleaner such as Nikwax Wash/Down Proof Mini Twinpack would be best. (See below for instructions on the cleaning process)

How to spray clean down

  • 1

Place the down garment on a coat hanger over a bath and close any zips and Velcro flaps.

  • 2

Shake the bottle well and spray the product on from a distance of 10-15cm. (You can do the whole garment, or just on small areas if necessary.)

  • 3

Wipe down with a clean damp cloth, and allow drying naturally.

However, after a lot of wear and use the down fill itself will be in need of a good clean as perspiration will have become trapped within the feathers, and built up overtime. A wash-in cleaner such as hkhdkhkd would be more suitable and provide a more thorough clean.

How to wash down

  • 1

Carefully hand-wash the item in luke-warm water using a specialist down cleaner (not detergent) ensuring the garment has room to move; a bath tub is ideal!

  • 2

Wash for approx. 15-20 minutes, gently moving the garment around every 5 minutes or so. (Avoid scrunching or kneading as this will crush the feather stalks.)

  • 3

Rinse the down thoroughly, ensuring no soap residue is left, then lift carefully from the water allowing it to drain naturally. Resist the temptation to squeeze or wring out the garment.

*If care label states it is 'machine washable', transfer the garment to a washing machine for a delicate spin programme or as label instructs.

  • 4

The majority of down garments can be tumble-dried (refer to care label for instructions). This process can take several hours. Check the item periodically, moving the clumps of down around and repeatedly turning inside out until completely dry.

Quick tip

Put a tennis ball or two in the drier with the garment; this helps to gently break up the clumps of down.

Don't be tempted to speed up the drying process. Although the outer fabrics may feel dry and warm to the touch, down contained within the baffling can still be clumped because of moisture; causing the down to look flatter and fall to the bottom.

Care label guide

  • Do not tumble dry.

  • Can be tumble-dried- if there is a dot in the middle (as in the image) this indicates only on a 'low setting'.

  • The figure indicates maximum wash temperature; a single line underneath means synthetic wash, and a double line means wool wash (gentle)

  • Do not bleach

  • Do not iron

  • Can be ironed- - if there is a dot in the middle (as in the image) this indicates only on a 'low heat'

  • Suitable for dry cleaning

  • *image needs a cross through to indicate it cannot be dry-cleaned.
